Eco Chic Craftacular Sponsor Profile: Firefly Play Cafe

Author Written by Adornments by Karla on Saturday, May 12, 2012 Date

Your name and business name.  Website if applicable.

Jennifer Kramer
Firefly Play Cafe
www.fireflyplaycafe.com

What do you create or sell?

Create fun playful environment for kids 6 and under!
Sell coffee, tea and a chance to socialize with friends or relax.
Offer a great place to host a party for a child or baby shower for friends!

How would you describe your style/esthetic?

Firefly Play Cafe aims to be a modern indoor playspace, with a couple of classics thrown in.

Personally, I love vintage, deco and refurbished.

What makes your business unique?

Firefly Play Cafe is the first indoor play space in Central Ohio.  People have been asking where we've been all their lives!

Can you describe your creative process?

As far as being creative in the indoor playspace, I am constantly scouring the web for fun kids activities, toys or ideas.  European toy styles are so wonderfully simple, I try to emulate or recreate those experiences here.

How did you get started?

I worked at COSI for 11 years, for 8 of those years I managed the little kidspace area and programming.  I'm pretty used to the fun, chaotic, crazy environment!

What is your typical day like? (schedule, hectic times, rewarding moments, keeping it all together, humorous, touching...etc.)

I spend a lot of time at Firefly and people always want to know how I can deal with the craziness of kiddos running around all the time.  Along with being used to this environment from my previous position, I love kids and their curiosity.  They have wonderfully zany imaginations and very literal interpretations of directions.  It's very amusing.  But moreso, it's fascinating to watch them learning.  If you sit back and observe, you really can see how, through play, a child is learning to navigate, build, negotiate, balance, role play and much more.

What do you do to unwind?

Walking my dog and a glass of wine, not together though.

Where do you find inspiration?

The words of children!

What else would you like people to know about you and your business?

We are the place to be if you have a young child.  We offer fun activities most mornings between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM.  Follow us on Facebook to learn more about daily activities and events.

Eco Chic Craftacular Vendor Profile: Cynthia Vardhan Ceramics

Author Written by Adornments by Karla on Friday, May 11, 2012 Date

Your name and business name.  Website if applicable.
My name is Cynthia Vardhan, business name Cynthia Vardhan Ceramics.  cynthiavardhan.etsy.com or cynthiavardhan.com
What do you create?
Handmade fine porcelain home accessories, like vases ranging in size from 3" tall (quite small) to 12" statement vases, dishes ranging in size from 3" to 7", jars, candles, and magnets.  My newest item for spring 2012 are garden markers and there will be more new products coming out as the year goes on!
How would you describe your style/esthetic?
I consider my style a contemporary take on historical ceramics and historical textile patterns.  Vibrant colors, different combinations, but still referencing patterns and shapes that are universal across cultures.
What makes your handcrafts unique?
I feel that they are unique because everything about them is handcrafted using 19 years of experience with clay.  I make my own clay from a recipe I developed myself, I throw everything on the wheel rather than casting them in molds, the patterns are applied by hand rather than pressed in with stamps.  The colors I use for the patterns I mix and developed myself and even the glaze is custom.  Each piece is labor intensive and I love every minute of it :)

How did you get started?
I first worked with clay in an after school program when I was 13 and I was hooked.  I honed my skills through high school, college and grad school where I earned an MFA in product design with an emphasis on ceramic design. I continued working with different styles and experimenting until I discovered my current line of work.
Is this your hobby, full time job or part time project/business?
This is my full time career.  It was a side business while I had a wonderful day job, but it got to the point where the ceramics were really taking off, so I had to quit the day job to concentrate full time on fulfilling orders and attending shows.
What do you do to unwind?
I honestly unwind by making more pieces!  Working in the studio is my favorite thing to do.  Recently, I started occasionally decorating cakes at Pattycake Bakery as a fun outlet, so that helps too.
Where do you find inspiration?
Travel and museums.  I spent last September in London soaking in the amazing Victoria & Albert Museum which has an entire floor dedicated to ceramics and its history, not to mention floors of textiles and various decorative arts.  And the city itself is inspiring.

Eco Chic Craftacular Vendor Profile: Crys Lappie, Label Yourself Designer

Author Written by Adornments by Karla on Thursday, May 10, 2012 Date

Your name and business name.  Website if applicable.
Label Yourself
Crys Darling

What do you create?
I create eco fashions by redesigning vintage and salvaged materials into original wearable art

How would you describe your style/esthetic?
My personal style reflects pin-up and rockabilly with an emphasis on fashions from the 1950's and 1960's; however, we believe that our clients and customers deserve to wear their own style.  Therefore, we design fashions based on people's individual style.

What makes your handcrafts unique?
My eco fashions are unique in the fact that we redesign vintage and gently salvaged materials into original wearable art.  As well as our eco fashions, we also create hand crafted jewelry, hand bags, reusable t-shirt tote bags and wall art.

Can you describe your creative process?
Our creative process begins with an original hand drawn design that is created into a hand cut stencil.  We then use the stencil as the background of our artwork.  Each piece is then hand painted with eco conscience paints and detailed with vintage buttons and ribbon.  Our pieces are as individual as the person wearing them.  Our pieces are never mass produced and are all one-of-a-kind.

How did you get started?
Hmmmm...where to begin?  I guess you can say I have been designing fashions since the age of 10 when I used bleach to create designs on my jeans; or maybe when I was a teenager and my grandma taught me how to mend clothes we received from the salvation army donations; or maybe even my 16th birthday when all I wanted to do was paint t-shirts with my friends at my party.  But Label Yourself fashions began almost 4 years ago in May.  It began with a vintage dress that I bought from a vintage store in Delaware.  The dress was heavily stained and unfortunately, I was not able to remove the stains.  I was in the process of shipping one of my paintings when I realized that I may be able to paint directly on the dress.  With much success, my friends raved about my darling little dress; inspiring me to design for others.

Is this your hobby, full time job or part time project/business?
Label Yourself began as a hobby and quickly grew into a successful indie fashion label.  We are in the process of branding our label and creating new designs like our new layered cupcakes.  They are so delicious that you can almost taste it.

What is your typical day like? (schedule, hectic times, rewarding moments, keeping it all together, humorous, touching...etc.)
My typical day begins with positive meditation that I carry throughout my day.  I believe in working hard and playing hard every day.  I have been an organic house keeper for over 8 years, I recently picked up a part time creative position at Skreened, and I design and create for Label Yourself.  Although my schedule is insane, I loath being bored and find happiness in my every day life.

What do you do to unwind?
I like to unwind by creating art; cooking vegetarian; playing frisbee golf with my friends; writing lyrics to songs; laughing out loud and watching Jerry Springer (now that is something to giggle over).

Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in almost everything including art, fashion, music, nature and people.  I'm inspired everyday!

What else would you like people to know about you and your business?
I would like people to know that fashion is not found on the cover of any magazine or on your tv screen.  True fashion comes from who we are as an individual and how we would like others to see us.  It is a reflection of our lives.  That is why we find it important to create fashions to celebrate people's individual style.

xoxo

May Artist of the Month Co-Founder of the Eco-Chic Craftacular, Kellie Gedert

Author Written by etsycolumbus on Date

Breakfast

Kellie celebrating her birthday and Cinco de Mayo

Two Pears

We are honored to have Kellie Gedert as our May artist as she was one of the co-founders of our very own Eco Chic Craftacular four years ago. Kellie and her family have 4 Etsy shops: bluegirlink.etsy.com : This shop features creative art and upcycled items and has been in existence for about 6 years.
blueraccoongirl.etsy.com: This shop features mosaics and found object supply store that Kellie started 3 years ago
one20farm.etsy.com: This shop is Kellie's family worm composting business that was started 4+ years ago
littlefruitbat.etsy.com: Kellie's 11 year daughter, Casie started her own Etsy shop full of little things she makes
As you can see from this, she is a true Etsy girl!

Originally she joined Etsy to develop a network with fellow artists and eventually joined ETC to make more connections locally. She has been on the leadership team for a number of years and says that it has allowed her to meet some very interesting people as well as developing long-lasting friendships.

She has a minor in interiors from CCAD and a BFA from OSU. Initially, her goal was to teach middle school art but ended up working in marketing for a local company, Hamilton Parker, and begins a new job this month at Two Caterers.

When asked to describe her art, Kellie says that she loves texutre and layers...lots of layers! She would categorize her art as abstract and mixed media that usually has a landscape or food theme. Since her hubby, Jeremy (Germ) is a chef, food has always been an inspiration particularly heirloom veggies because of their amazing textures and patterns. She is also inspired by aerial landscapes and farmland. Textures, well- worn, aged and rough, have motivated her in many of her pieces.

Her techniques are hard to explain because she says she learns as she goes along, thinking that she should record what she does as she goes along but rarely does. She tends to work on 4-8 paintings at once and rotate, leaves them for a week and returns to do the same. Once she gets good backgrounds going, she works on each one independently.

Because of working full time, having kids and running an urban farm, her time for art shows is limited to one or two shows a year. Her first love, of course, is the Eco Chic Craftacular because Clintonville is so supportive and excited about the event. Plus it's profits help support the Whetstone Community Center, that's the best part!

This year at the ECC she and her 7 year son, Milo, will have a kids table on Saturday with "build your own bottle cap snakes" with proceeds benefiting ADOPT, a pet rescue group. They have been collecting bottle caps all spring and he is excited to be taking part in the day's festivities.

She and her hubby own a urban worm farm called One20 Farm in Columbus and particpated in the Clintonville Farmers Market in the early season.Their worm castings are the perfect seed starters and fertilizer for gardens so they are thrilled to be an addition to this successful farmers market. If you missed them at the Farmer's market, you can find their products at City Folks Farm Shop in Clintonville.

Her most exciting news, however, was to have she and Germ nominated for the Slow Food Terra Madre trip to Italy in October. They entered in March and are crossing their fingers! By the way, for those of you who are unfamiliar with slow food, Slow Food USA is an incredible group that educates people on slowing down and enjoying real food. This initiative was started in Italy and its bi-annual conference hosts thousands of folks from all over the world.

We are also keeping our fingers crossed for the Gederts and wish them the very best in all of their 2012 events!

April Artist of the Month: Rachel Murdock

Author Written by etsycolumbus on Date

Rachel Murdock

Our April artist of the month is Rachel Murdock (shop is Artzymorena (http://www.etsy.com/shop/artzymorena). opened since May of 2010).
Rachel has been a member of Etsy Team Columbus (ETC) for almost a year. Since becoming a member she has participated in Hit-n-Run at CS Gallery, donated swag for last year’s Eco Chic, worked the ETC Art Festival booth, sold at the ETC table at Craftin’ Outlaws, volunteered as an ETC member for several community events and most recently became a leader of the team. Currently, she is busily helping plan the annual Eco Chic Craftacular (May19th-20th) serving as co-chair to both the Volunteer Coordinator and Sponsorship Coordinator positions alongside fellow teammate Vicki Oster.

She was born and raised in Columbus, graduating from Westland High School in 2004, and going on to study Art Therapy and Art Education at Capital University (2008 grad) . She has a varied background in the arts which includes interning at galleries, volunteering at the Goodwill Art Studio, and coordinating local art spaces in Columbus. For the past four years, she has taught elementary art for Hilliard City Schools and absolutely loves it! You can see what her students are exploring by checking out her classroom blog:
http://pocketartroom.blogspot.com/. In addition, she occasionally fills in at the Children’s Art Studio in Bexley (http://artwithanna.org/default.aspx).

In regards to her Etsy shop, Rachel likes all things classic. She likes to make pieces either her grandmother and best friend would wear--pieces that have a nostalgic "va-va-voom" quality without too much fuss. She used to buy hairpieces at shows, but then started to question the sources for feathers and thought the items weren’t well made. These concerns led her to open her own shop where she features only cruelty-free feathers and up-cycled fabrics. She also thinks her price point is more reasonable than some of the shops that make similar items. Being a frugal lady herself, she believes there ought to be a balance between cost and value. To quote Rachel: "if it is well made and doesn’t cost more than your shirt, than it’s probably a reasonably priced headband, right?"

In the realm of fine art, she considers herself to be a mixed media artist who concentrates mostly on non-representation color studies. Because of her knowledge of art therapy, she prefers to focus more on the process rather than the product. Other than an idea of what color harmonies she would like to explore, she states that she rarely starts with a plan but like to see where her art takes her. "To me, art should be freeing and fun." Probably what makes her a great art teacher!!

Inspiration comes from anything that she finds beautiful. For her paintings, it can be a color relationship seen in nature, or a grouping of objects that are pleasing. When it comes to her hairpieces, she really digs 20's-50's era fashion. and would love to see hairpieces (feather, tiny hats) make a comeback. Seeing them gain attention during the Royal Wedding Ceremony between Prince William and Kate Middleton made her very happy!

She has shown her art at several Short North spots, including 83 Gallery and Short North Tattoo and her a peacock painting on a skateboard was featured during a 2011 Short North Gallery Hop.

Currently she is creating more fine art and exploring more options for selling her hairpieces. Last year, she had a successful booth at Comfest (Four Femmes) and would like keep up that momentum to see where it takes her as she feels she does better at shows where people can try on her pieces.

Most of her free time in 2012 has been consumed with helping to plan the 2012 Eco Chic Craftacular. Not only is this her first time vending at Eco Chic, but she is also working to wrangle sponsorships and volunteers (two new positions for her since joining the team). Although she states that it has been a lot of work, she has enjoyed it and is getting very excited about the event!

If you (and maybe a friend of two) would like to volunteer for the Eco Chic Craftacular, please email her at
rachelemurdock@gmail.com. Also, if you are looking for unique for a special event and it is not in her shop, contact her as she loves creating pieces to meet your specifications♥

Finally, be sure to tune in to CD101/102.5 on Friday, May 18 2012 as Rachel will be the guest DJ from 1:00-2:00 p.m. and plugging our Eco Chic Craftacular. She's excited (but kind of scared!) so let's cheer her on!

We wish Rachel the best in her endeavors and feel quite lucky to have her as a member of ETC.

March Artist of the Month-Gina Lewis

Author Written by etsycolumbus on Thursday, March 1, 2012 Date

GINA LEWIS

Our featured artist for March is Gina Lewis of GL Studios. Gina opened her Etsy shop in the summer of 2011 and began to work her shop in earnest in the latter part of the year so her shop is still in its infancy. She also joined Etsy Team Columbus in 2011. She volunteered at West Elm during the holidays and will help with planning the Eco-Chic Craftacular this year. Most recently, she became the creator and editor of ETC's public newsletter.

Gina is a self-taught artist but has learned a lot from her mom. She did take printing in high school where she learned how to develp plates, and run an offset lithography printing press. She also learned screened printing and photography (not only taking pictures but developing her own film). The moment that an image appears on paper is like magic to her.

When asked to categorize her art, she stated that she has a couple of different styles. When working on canvas, she tends to use lots of layers. Whereas, when she works on smaller surfaces like paper, she tends to keep things simple. She thinks her work is colorful and cheerful with a bit of whimsy. Others have told her that her work has a Folkart look.

Her inspiration comes first and foremost from children and their artwork but she is also inspired by nature and all things Scandanavian/Dutch. Whenever she needs a pick-me-up, she flips through her Danish home decor magazines.

Using rubbing alcohol in her work is her latest technique along with learning that it can be your wardrobe's best friend. As she likes to paint when the inspiration strikes, she often forgets to put on an apron and her clothes have suffered the consequences as acrylic paints don't come out of clothing easily. So her tip to our readers is to use rubbing alcohol! She has also found that it creates a lovely distressed look to her art when she layers her paint. However, she recommends that one should experiment with it to discover the effect wanted and how long the alcohol should be left on the painting.

At this time, Skipping Rock Farms Pop-up vintage store in Bexley is featuring some of her textiles and she has been contacted through Etsy by soem gift shops out West to carry her work. She would also like to explore wholesale and selling her work in more local venues although her goal at the present time is to expand her line of product. She will be teaching a Mother/Daughter Together Workshop at Skipping Rock in May(http://skippingrockfarm.com/ ), teaching moms and their daughters how to make memories together.

We are happy to have Gina join our team and appreciate all that she has already done to promote our team!
